Astute bettors who have been paying attention this year to the phenomenal success of Gone Astray's first two crops had a bonanza afternoon at Gulfstream West on Nov. 3 when Gone Jak broke his maiden in his career debut and paid $22.60 in the win column. The 2-year-old colt became winner No. 42 for his sire this season, earned a check for $17,600, and solidified Gone Astray's position as Florida's second-leading second-crop sire and sixth-leading general sire with progeny earnings of $2,136,311. Under Pedro Monterrey Jr., Gone Jak was off a close-up third behind the two pacesetters, made a bold move on the turn and proved to be much the best down the lane, drawing off to score by six widening lengths in 1:05.35 for the 5 1/2 furlongs.
