Sassy Astray overcame a very troubled trip on the turf course and became Gone Astray's 15th winner of the year at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday. It took all the skills of Hall of Fame candidate Javier Castellano to right the ship for the 4-year-old filly as she scored her second career victory, at odds of 8/5. Sassy Astray was bumped leaving the gate in the 7 1/2-furlong race, then Castellano had to jerk her back sharply to avoid clipping heels when another horse came over in front of her. She was dead last after half a mile but her rider swung her out four wide into the stretch and Sassy Astray closed with a rush to get up in the final 50 yards, prevailing by three-quarters of a length. The victory was worth $12,200.
