Alan Porter Analysis

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Wrote is a grade one winning son of High Chaparral. A Champion in Europe and two-time Champion in the U.S., High Chaparral won the English (gr. I) and Irish (gr. I) Derbys, and back-to-back renewals of the Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. I). One of the best runners by the great stallion, Sadler’s Wells, High Chaparral is already responsible for nine group/grade one winners, establishing himself as one of Sadler’s Wells best sire sons. Wrote also comes from a famous family as is third dam is not only a three-quarters sister to Sadler’s Wells, but also to Champion Sires Nureyev and Fairy King.

The cross of High Chaparral over mares from the Mr. Prospector line has produced five stakes winners, including the group and grade one winners Redwood (out of a mare by Woodman, also sire of Hansel) and Toronado (out of a mare by Grand Slam, a son of Gone West, also sire of Elusive Quality, Mr. Greeley, Speightstown and Proud Citizen), a group winner out of a mare by Machiavellian (sire of Street Cry), and a stakes winner out of a mare by King’s Best (by Kingmambo, also sire of Lemon Drop Kid).

Other sons and branches of Mr. Prospector that have worked with Sadler’s Wells or that appeal here include Lion Cavern (a brother to Gone West), Conquistador Cielo (sire of Marquetry and grandsire of Artax, who would be particularly interesting here), Seeking the Gold (sire of Petionville, Mutakddim and Cape Town), Northern Afleet (who brings in Sadler’s Wells’ three-quarters brother Nureyev and is sire of Afleet Alex), Gulch (sire of Thunder Gulch), Distorted Humor (sire of Sharp Humor, Any Given Saturday, and Flower Alley, who gives inbreeding to Sadler’s Wells and his three-quarters relatives), Fusaichi Pegasus, Crafty Prospector (sire of Robyn Dancer and Prospectors Gamble) and Geiger Counter, Numerous and Chequer, who all give inbreeding to Wrote’s family. From the Exclusive Native branch of the line descending from Mr. Prospector’s sire, Raise a Native, there is a stakes winner by High Chaparral out of a mare by Affirmed. Mares carrying Alydar – another son of Raise a Native – through Alysheba should also work well.

High Chaparral has enjoyed success when bred over certain branches of the Northern Dancer line. Wrote is out of a mare from the Danzig line through Green Desert, but should cross well over mares from other branches of that line, including Danehill (both Danehill and his son Danehill Dancer are broodmare sires of stakes winners by High Chaparral). High Chaparral also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Danehill’s relative, Orpen. Other Danzig line stallions to appear as broodmare sires of Sadler’s Wells line stakes winners including Anabaa, Dayjur, Honor Grades, Pine Bluff, Polish Numbers, Sinndar and his sire Grand Lodge (by Chief’s Crown) and War Chant and the cross could also be tried through daughters of Langfuhr, Boundary, Belong to Me, War Front, Exchange Rate, Lost Soldier, Danzig Connection and Katowice.

From Storm Bird line mares High Chaparral has group winners out of daughters of Bluebird and Mujadil. Mujadil is bred on an identical cross to Storm Cat and this strain should also work well here. Stormy Atlantic (from the same family as Sadler’s Wells and Wrote) particularly appeals, and there are also Sadler’s Wells line stakes winners out of mares by Cat Thief, Catienus, Catrail, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat), Forestry, Giants Causeway, High Yield, Menifee (by Harlan, also sire of Harlan’s Holiday), Mountain Cat and Tail of the Cat (whose son, Lion Heart might also work well).

Our of mares descending from Sadler’s Wells three-quarters brother, Nureyev, High Chaparral has sired grade one winner Wigmore Hall from a mare by Theatrical, a group winner out of a mare by Pivotal, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Peintre Celebre. Nureyev might also be introduced through Atticus, Fasliyev, Stravinsky, Unusual Heat and Zilzal. High Chaparral also has a group winner out of a mare by Turtle Island (by Sadler’s Wells’ brother, Fairy King) and a group winner out of a mare by Salse (a son of Sadler’s Wells’ relative, Topsider).

From the Blushing Groom line, High Chaparral has sired stakes winners from daughters of Nashwan and Rainbow Quest, we might also consider mares by Arazi, Candy Stripes, Mt. Livermore (sire of Orientate, Housebuster and Peaks and Valleys), Rahy and Wekiva Springs and his sire Runaway Groom (also sire of Cherokee Run), all of whom are broodmare sires of Sadler’s Wells line stakes winners.

From the Roberto line, High Chaparral is sire of a stakes winner out of Red Ransom, and the Sadler’s Wells/Roberto cross has also been represented by stakes winners out of mares by Dynaformer, Kris S. (and his sons Arch – who gives inbreeding to the family of Wrote’s broodmare sire, Green Desert – Prized and You and I), Lear Fan (who should suit particularly well(), and Silver Hawk.

High Chaparral also has a group winner out of a mare by Highest Honor (introducing Riverman, who should be good here) and a stakes winner by that horse’s sire, Kenmare) and a group winner out of a mare by Warning (by Known Fact). We can also note that Wrote is inbred 4 x 3 to the stallion Kris, and may be suited by mares carrying Kris’s brother, Diesis.
