Flashstorm has opened 2017 with a pair of sharp maiden winners by just-turned 3-year-olds, one in Tampa and the other in Puerto Rico. At Tampa Bay Downs, Lightning Flash came from well back in the pack under Shannon Uske to score at a flat mile on the grass as the 9/5 favorite. Uske took the colt 3-wide on the turn, was four-wide into the stretch and rushed by the leaders to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. Lightning Flash has posted a victory and two thirds in five starts, and collected $8,150 for his initial score . . . At Camarero Race Track, Luis Guillermo broke his maiden in his fourth start after finishing third by two necks in his previous try. Luis Rivera took the Puerto Rican-bred colt wire-to-wire at 6 1/2 furlongs, and Luis Guillermo, at odds of 4/5, won off by himself.
