GONE ASTRAY CELEBRATES DERBY WITH ANOTHER STREAK

After getting six winners in a span of eight days at the end of April, Gone Astray went on another tear to celebrate Kentucky Derby week. The son of Dixie Union added another five winners in the last five days and raised his total for 2017 to 29. The combined purse money boosted Gone Astray's progeny earnings to $708,884 and moved him up to fifth place on Florida's leading sire list . . . At Gulfstream Park yesterday, two of his runners set the stage in the final hour before the big race at Churchill Downs. In the ninth race, Roraima Dos scored her second career victory with Aby Medina aboard for the first time. The 3-year-old filly bolted out of the gate from the No. 10 post, sat a clear second early, put away the leader in the stretch and drew off to score by three lengths, paying a whopping $58.20. She collected $9,400 after getting six furlongs in 1:11.63 . . . Two races later, with the Derby horses leaving the paddock, Switched broke his maiden in his fifth start, battling for the lead on the outside until the stretch, and drawing off late to score by 1 1/2 lengths. The 3-year-old gelding was clocked in 1:11.72 for the six furlongs and earned a check of $10,400 for owner/breeder Kathy Machesky . . . Boss She's Gone contributed to the Derby festivities at Louisiana Downs, breaking her maiden as the 2-1 favorite in her second start after posting a second-place finish at Delta Downs in her debut on March 4. The 4-year-old filly made up a deficit of more than six lengths under Jose Guerrero and was up at the wire to win by one-half length . . . Two days earlier, Heart Astray, who had finished third in the OBS Sprint for Fillies, scored at Gulfstream with Edgard Zayas, racing five furlongs on the grass in a quick :55.61. The 3-year-old filly earned $13,200 for the effort . . . Gone Rose got the ball rolling at Parx earlier in the week, breaking her maiden going a flat mile with a sharp, come-from behind victory by nearly five lengths as the 5/2 favorite. The 3-year-old filly who had been idle since January added $10,800 to her bank account.
