Shakakan became Gone Astray's 38th winner of 2016 with a game wire-to-wire score racing five furlongs over the turf course yesterday at Gulfstream West. The 3-year-old filly set blistering fractions with Tyler Gaffalione - a quarter in :21.35 and a half in :44.81 - then held off Belladini through a long stretch duel to win by a neck in :57.20. The winner's check for the $34,000 allowance optional claimer was $20,800 and raised Shakakan's earnings to $68,520 in just six starts. With 2 1/2 months remaining in the racing season, Gone Astray has already surpassed the $2 million mark in progeny earnings.
