La Irunesa, the Puerto Rican-bred daughter of United States who broke her maiden in the Gr. III Criadores de Puerto Rico as a 2-year-old, went wire-to-wire in a six-furlong allowance race at Camarero Race Track on July 30. The 3-year-old filly, who is also Gr. I and Gr. II stakes-placed, scored by 1 1/2 lengths under Edwin Castro. She has been first, second or third in nine of 13 career starts, earning $73,357 despite being saddled by racing at a track with a minimum purse structure . . . Caribean Spirit was much the best racing five furlongs at Arapahoe Park, moving up to the leaders on the turn and drawing off to win by 2 3/4 lengths. The 3-year-old colt by Flashstorm, another winner bred by Northwest Stud, was sent off as the 5/2 favorite and completed the distance in :58.98 for his second victory.
